I cannot for the life of me figure out why I am unable to run The Witcher 3 for longer than thirty minutes before the application closes itself. It does not crash, it closes. No windows application, system or security error logs. I have tried the following fixes:
Adjusted settings to every pre-set setting from Low to Ultra: No change Adjusted Settings manually without presets to create a custom detail level: No change AA Off: No Change All recommended gog.com fixes: No change Adjusted swap file size to correct size (16,384MB x 1.5 = 25,576MB. Was 16,575 system configured ): No change Underclocked GPU: No change Underclocked GPU and CPU: No change Underclocked CPU: No change
My system crashed once from overheating. Performed routine maintenance and cable management more than decreased my temperatures, giving light to the current issues I now have
I am starting to run out of ways to troubleshoot this short of trying to actually run real-time debuggers or calling CDPR and pleading with them to assist me. This is my last stop before I am completely out of options. My specs are below:
AMD FX 8350 Radeon R9 290X (AMD 15.5 Beta Drivers) 16GB RAM Windows 7 x64 700w Power Supply
My 290X never exceeds 70c CPU never exceeds 43c
I am desperate. If anyone can assist me in any way, I would be over the moon grateful!
So The Witcher 3 has been crashing constantly ever since I started playing it and I'm having a hard time diagnosing it. I've still played it a fair bit but now I'm at my wits end (playing 10 minutes before a crash is considered good, often it'll crash while loading). I'm pretty sure it's some faulty hardware of mine but I'm not sure to start.
Typically I'll either get an actual error (APPCRASH) or it'll just boot me to desktop with no errors. It can crash at any point (while moving, while playing gwent, while loading and while doing just about nothing).
An APPCRASH always looks like this:
What I've tried:
Reinstalling the game.
Installing the game on another hardrive.
Updating graphics card drivers.
Messing around with in-game settings (fps limit, hair works, fullscreen/windowed, lowest graphics, highest graphics, resolution etc).
Installing via gog galaxy and stand-alone.
I just formated my entire computer and reinstalled windows and it still crashed within 3 minutes of starting a new game, so I'm pretty sure some hardware is at fault.
I recently also played through x-com again and this would also crash (but very rarely in comparison to the witcher 3).
I ran memtest a while back and it turned up with no errors. My graphics card is brand new (and I had crashes before I switched it out as well) so I don't /think/ it's responsible but it could be. Considering I've installed it on different HDD's I don't think it's a drive fault either. This leaves either the PSU, the motherboard or the CPU. I ran a CPU test the other day (hot CPU tester, not sure if that's any good or if someone can recommend some other software) and after 6 hours of testing it informed me it found a faulty checksum in some of its calculations, so I'm thinking the CPU could be at fault.
I honestly have no clue how to properly test my motherboard or PSU. Any hints on this would be greatly appreciated because at this point I just can't be bothered playing anything at all.
I can see why there are several posts suspecting it might be your video card overheating.. the behavior you describe kind of suggests it.. but it might be power settings.
Check the 'Manage 3D Settings' category in the NVIDIA Control Panel and make sure your Power Management Mode is set to Optimal Power. This is the default setting, so its kind of a long shot, but when it comes to troubleshooting, you need to be thorough.
With that 'thorough' concept in mind, test the stability during game play. If you can, find a large group of wolves or nekkers or something.. try to cause graphic intensive activity. If it really is overheating, the GPU fan should cause a noticeable sound difference, not to mention the game would crash soon after. This serves the purpose of eliminating the cause more than it attempts to resolve the issue, but if you have overheating hardware, it needs to be addressed immediately.
Here's a final suggestion should your issue persist. Find the game installation folder.. which, I think, by default is
C:Program Files(x86)The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
and navigate to the binconfigbase folder. Now locate the rendering.ini file and create a copy somewhere.. anywhere.
Once you have the file backed up, Right-Click and Edit it. Either use the search function or skim the variables (under the [Rendering] block) until you spot TextureMemoryBudget=500 and increase this to 1024. Save the file, and test out the game again.
Hope this helps. If not, I think the error information needs to be analyzed a little more closely.. in an attempt to narrow down and pinpoint a more precise cause.
Try to 'underclock' your GTX 970 with a tool like Nvidia Inspector. You can start with -50Mhz for Base Clock Offset and -200Mhz for Memory Clock Offset. If this would run stable, you can increase the values until Witcher 3 crashes again.
Turn off in-game V-Sync and use Nvidia Adaptive V-Sync/ Dynamic V-Sync for AMD.
Uncap the Framerate. Set 'Maximum Frames Per Second' to 'Unlimited.' There is no need to limit our framerate and let GPU/CPU power go unused.
Set the Display Mode to 'Full Screen' and not on 'Borderless Window.'
These three simple tweaks can improve the overall stability and make the game more responsive. If you want to use V-Sync, I recommend using Nvidia's Adaptive V-Sync for Nvidia users or Dynamic V-Sync for AMD users (by using Radeon Pro).

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is about to launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and, while many of yours have not started the game, many others have been able to get an early copy of it. Those are streamers or just lucky guys who have been in contact with retailers not really caring about street dates. Anyway, all this has allowed us to discover and explain to you some crashes, errors, freezing, low FPS, lag, DLL and other issues that could prevent you from starting your witcher adventure properly. Let's take a look at how to fix them.
Fix For CRASH
Update graphics drivers first. That didn't work? Try and download any missing DLL. Any software from LucidLogix? You might need to remove it Reinstall and fix .Net Framework 4 Client Profile, then go to the game's launcher and change some of the settings that may have caused the issue
Fix For CRASH ON 32-bit SYSTEM
You will need to allow your 32-bit system to recognize 3GB of RAM. This is how you do it:
For Windows 7 and 8:
Go to start → run and type: cmd Type: bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072 Restart your PC If you want to reverse it: bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa
For Windows XP:
Right-click My Computer. Click Properties.
In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings. In the Startup and Recovery dialog box, under System startup, click Edit. The Windows boot.ini file will be opened in Microsoft Notepad. Create a backup copy of the boot.ini file. Note: Boot.ini files may vary from computer to computer. Select the following line in the boot.ini file: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS=”Micro soft Windows XP Professional” /fastdetect Note: Do not overwrite any existing lines. Press Ctrl+C to copy the line and then press Ctrl+V to paste it immediately below the original line. Note: Your text string may be different from the text string in this solution, so be sure to copy the text string from your boot.ini file, and not the text string included here. Modify the copied line to include ” /3GB”, as shown in the following example: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional 3GB” /3GB /fastdetect Note: Do not overwrite any existing lines.
Save and close the boot.ini file. Click OK to close each dialog box. Restart your computer.
Hoi4 soldiers radio mod. During startup, select the 3GB option. If you do not select the 3GB option, the system will default to the 2GB total memory setting. Note: If problems occur during startup, you may need to update some of your drivers.
Fix For CRASH ON LINUX
Witcher 3 Crashing Computer
Simply verify your game's cache on Steam and, according to users, this will fix any crash on Linux
Fix For CRASH WHILE SAVING
This seems to happen exclusively in 32-bit systems due to low memory. To solve it, press windows key + R key to bring up the Run window. Write “bcdedit /set increaseUserVa 3072″ without the ” and press Enter. Reboot the PC.
You can see how to reverse this process at the point “crashing on 32-bit systems” of this guide.
Fix For Low FPS
Try one or more of this solutions:
Update graphics drivers Lower graphics settings in the game's launcher. Texture Memory Size is said to be particularly expensive on the memory side Beware, autodetection sometimes can enable higher display options You might be required to turn off unnecessary background software and overclocking utilities
UPDATE
The Witcher 3 Lag and Low FPS fix:
Witcher 3 Crash To Desktop Fix
First and the foremost thing Update the drivers, it can provide you a sudden boost in Frame-Rate-Per-Second. If not follow the workaround provided below:
Start Playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt 'Window Mode' by disabling Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering and adaptive Anti-Aliasing through catalyst control center/ Geforce Experience. Go To Task Manager and set the priority of The Witcher 3 game as 'HIGH' Go To Nvidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D Settings and set Power Management Mode to 'Prefer Maximum Peformance'
The Witcher 3 Download Stuck At 99% On Steam:
First of all make sure you have '35GB' HDD Space free. There is a small tweak available for this issue: Click On Pause, you will receive a notification that 'Download' has been moved from Suspended to Download 'Paused'. Now Un-Pause, you will see a message 'Download is complete'. There is a chance that the game servers will be BUSY so you might have to re-download the entire game right from the start.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Failed To Launch
There is a very slim chance that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt might FAILED to launch and gets stucked at Steam Library. In this case, you have to make sure that you have downloaded the entire game properly, verify the Game Cache Files and restore all the missing files.
